So I read another YA novel, though this one is a little bit different. Maximum Ride, unlike its YA counterparts, is relatively less focused on romance. In fact, The first book in the series- The Angel Experiment is almost romance-free( gasp).
The story is about a group of genetically engineered kids who grew bird wings and can fly. To make things even more complicated, their wings were added to them after they were born in painful, inhumane experiments. The pack has been running from those evil scientist responsible for their wings and the scientists's evil dogs ever since they escaped. The Maximum Ride series is essentially about how they managed to survive and go through the usual teenager issues.
I actually like Maximum Ride because it has managed to surprise me, which is rare in YA novels nowadays. A lot of these young adult novels are sticking with what works, and is not experimenting with new things. Eventually, even non-geniuses like myself can figure out how the plot is going to go ( one girl, two guys...same old same old). The Maximum Ride series is filled with action of unexpected events. The plot is also quite nice.
